Fly Smart: This Expert Reveals How to Score the Best Flight Deals This Summer
Spend Less on Your Flight so You Can Spend More During Your Actual Vacation!
Summer is coming, and with it, the itch to go on holiday! It can be difficult to secure an affordable flight these days. However, it can be done with a few helpful tips. If you are in the middle of planning a summer holiday, and want the best deal possible on your flight, all you have to do is follow these simple hacks.
Bargain hunter at Bountii, Jason Higgs, reveals five hacks you can follow to find a cheaper flight and save a bit of money on your upcoming holiday trip.
Avoid Peak Travel Time Frenzy
Think about where you want to go, and if that particular city will be in its peak tourist season. Oftentimes, flights are cheaper during a city’s off-season. If you have the option to be flexible with your dates, booking your flight during the off-season is a great way to save money on your flight.
If you can’t manage a trip during the off-season, then consider booking your flight on a day of the week that people don’t usually travel (and will therefore be cheaper). Typically, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are the cheapest days to fly.
Avoiding peak travel times also includes taking into account the time of day. People often travel weekday evenings, and Sundays during the day. So be sure to check out those early or late flights for a better deal.
The Early Bird Catches the Best Flight
Maybe you are one of those people who likes to wait around until the last minute to see if you can snag that discounted, last-minute flight. More often than not, this does not really work, and it is not recommended. In fact, flight tickets are at their cheapest when they are first released, which is one year in advance.
“Therefore, in this case, the early bird really does catch the worm! If you are planning to fly during a busy time or popular holiday, it is best to book your flight as early as possible,” says Jason.
Shop Around
Luckily for you, in this day and age, there are dozens of apps and websites specifically made to track the cost of flights. Never just go with the first flight you see! Make sure you shop around and do your research to confirm that you are getting the best deal.
Apps like Hopper notify you when the price of your tracked flight has gone up or down, and even lets you freeze that price for 20 days in case the price lowers. Other comparison sites like Skyscanner, Kayak, and even Google Flights are incredibly popular and helpful.
Beware Budget Airlines
It may seem like you’re getting a better deal on a budget airline, but be careful. Many budget airlines, such as Ryanair, have extra fees that are typically included in other airlines. For instance, a basic Ryanair flight lets you take one baggage piece that must measure equal to or less than the dimensions of a backpack, while making you pay extra for any additional luggage.
Things like choosing your seat, luggage, on-board snacks, and more are often extra on those budget airlines. So if these types of things matter to you, you may want to consider booking with an airline which already has all of these things included with the ticket price.
Go Incognito
Jason shares that “when you look at the same flight repeatedly from the same device, airlines use this data to gauge how much they can charge per ticket. The more you look back at the same ticket, the more the airline knows you’re likely to buy it, and will therefore raise the price.”
One way to counter this is by using the incognito tab to look for flights. This shields the airline from knowing data like your location and identity, and using that data to upcharge you. Don’t allow cookies, and if you have done so in the past, try to delete your search cookies before buying your flight to see if the price lowers.
“Flying during the peak season of summer doesn’t have to break the bank. Following these tips should help you still travel on a budget, no matter the time of year”, concludes Jason.
