A District and Sessions Court in Pakistan acquitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in two cases related to May 9 violence, reported ARY News. The court cited insufficient evidence as the reason for Khan’s acquittal.
Imran Khan’s counsel, Mirza Asim Beg and Naeem Panjotha, completed their arguments on the bail pleas before the court. The verdict was announced by Judicial Magistrate Omar Shahab, who heard the bail pleas concerning the cases registered at Shahzad Town Police Station.
According to Khan’s lawyer, the FIR was filed by an unauthorized person, and although Khan was charged under Section 109, no evidence was presented against him.
Earlier, Imran Khan had filed a plea seeking acquittal in the May 9 violence cases. His counsel, Naeem Panjutha, informed the court about the suspension of Khan’s Toshakhana sentence, while mentioning that sentences in other cases were still pending.
The violent clashes on May 9 last year erupted across Pakistan following Imran Khan’s arrest, leading to protests in various cities. The unrest prompted the armed forces to intervene to maintain law and order, with army installations, including the Corps Commander’s house in Lahore, coming under attack during the protests by PTI workers.
Imran Khan was named as the main accused in all the May 9 riots cases, although the recent court decision has acquitted him of the charges.
