Sri-Lanka Releases Tamil Nadu Fishermen; Safely Return to India
Five fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy, have been safely returned to India. The Indian embassy in Sri Lanka confirmed their repatriation, stating that they will arrive in India later this evening. This comes after the recent repatriation of nineteen fishermen on April 4, who were also detained by the Sri Lankan authorities and sent to Chennai.
The detention of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy has become a recurring issue. In response to these incidents, fishermen from Rameswaram staged a symbolic strike on February 5 to highlight their longstanding grievances. They presented a list of demands aimed at addressing the challenges they face, including the return of their voter ID cards to the central government and boycotting elections if their demands are not met.
Expressing concern over the escalating attacks on the state’s fishing community, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and resolve the issue promptly. In a letter to PM Modi, Chief Minister Stalin emphasized the impact of these detentions on the livelihood of the fishermen who have been using these fishing waters for generations. He called for the renewal of the Joint Action Group to address the fishermen’s issues and highlighted a significant increase in the number of fishermen being arrested by the Sri Lankan authorities.
