IMD Predicts Light to Moderate Rains in Jammu and Kashmir Amidst Upcoming Western Disturbance
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating the likelihood of light to moderate rains in the picturesque region of Jammu and Kashmir from October 9. The anticipated weather phenomenon is attributed to the influence of an approaching western disturbance. While the IMD prepares for this event, the local meteorological department has made a distinct prediction—snowfall is expected to blanket the higher altitudes of Jammu and Kashmir.
Understanding the Western Disturbance
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh western disturbance is poised to make its presence felt in North India starting on the night of Sunday, October 8. Western disturbances, meteorological systems born over the Mediterranean Sea, embark on a westward journey, amassing moisture along the way. Ultimately, this moisture is released over North India, influencing the weather patterns in the region.
Weather Outlook for North India
Under the imminent influence of this disturbance, the IMD anticipates scattered light to moderate rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on Monday, October 9. The exact duration of these showers remains uncertain, with forecasts expected to become clearer in the days leading up to next week.
In preparation for the potential weather changes, the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in New Delhi has issued a yellow watch for the Western Himalayan states on Monday. This advisory serves as a gentle reminder for residents to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions.
Snowfall on the Horizon
In contrast, the meteorological department in Kashmir has diverged slightly from the IMD’s forecast. It predicts that snowfall will grace the higher reaches of the region from October 9 to October 10. Beyond this snowy interlude, mainly dry weather is expected from October 11 to 13. However, from October 14 onwards, the weather may remain dry, with a brief spell of rain forecasted for a few areas.
