JNU Plans Campus Survey for Enhanced Security Amid Anti-National Slogans

In response to recent incidents involving ‘anti-national’ slogans appearing on the walls of its campus, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi is taking proactive measures to address the issue. The university administration has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive campus survey with the aim of identifying suitable locations for the installation of CCTV cameras to bolster security and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

Ramping Up Surveillance for Preventive Measures

The decision to increase surveillance comes in the wake of a report from the university’s Chief Security Officer, who documented an incident of such slogans at the School of Languages. Despite opposition from the JNU Students Union (JNUSU), which has voiced concerns about privacy infringement, the university administration is moving forward with the plan. To facilitate this process, a committee comprising administrative and technical staff will be formed to determine the necessary actions to curb such incidents on campus.

    Comprehensive Security Measures Proposed

In addition to the installation of CCTV cameras, JNU’s chief security officer has advised implementing various security measures. These include establishing a single entry/exit point for all schools and centers within the university, maintaining an entry/exit register, and ensuring adequate lighting in corridors. The administration has also proposed conducting orientation programs to sensitize the JNU community and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

    Previous Incidents and Responses

Several similar incidents have occurred on the JNU campus in recent years, raising concerns about security and campus atmosphere. Earlier this year, an anti-Muslim statement, authored by unknown individuals, was discovered on the university’s walls. In response, the ABVP (Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) accused Left-aligned student bodies of vandalism. Both the ABVP and the JNU Teachers Forum (JNUTF) called for an investigation into the incident and emphasized the need for punitive action by the administration.

    Responsibility and Action Plan

Taking these incidents seriously, the JNU administration is determined to implement all possible measures to prevent their recurrence. A report from the Chief Security Officer detailing the recent incident will be utilized to pinpoint potential locations for the installation of CCTV cameras. Given the sprawling nature of the campus, the administration will also explore additional measures to bolster security comprehensively.
