Vehicle Checking Leads to Seizure of Gold Worth Rs 5.73 Crores
Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Nalgonda police in Telangana seized gold worth Rs 5.73 crores during a routine vehicle check within the jurisdiction of Miryalguda 1 Town police station limits. Sudhakar, Station House Officer, Miryalguda 1 Town Police station, stated that the gold was being transported from Miryalguda to Khammam in a vehicle, with further details awaited.
Strict Vigilance by District Police
Chandana Deept, Superintendent of Police, Nalgonda, highlighted that the vehicle checking was part of the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct following the announcement of the Lok Sabha election schedule earlier in the month. The district police have intensified vehicle checks to prevent illegal transportation of cash and valuables aimed at influencing voters. As per an official statement, a police team led by G Sudhakar – Inspector of Police, intercepted a vehicle heading towards Kodad side on March 18 around 11:30 am.
Seizure and Investigation
Upon inspection, the police discovered gold worth Rs 5.73 crores being illegally transported in violation of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) guidelines. The respondents and the gold were taken into custody, and an investigation was initiated based on a complaint lodged by the Flying Squad.
ECI’s Measures to Ensure Fair Elections
The ECI has announced several measures to prevent the misuse of money and muscle power in the upcoming general elections in 2024. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar highlighted extensive reviews with enforcement agencies to curb the flow of illicit money. He noted that cash movement worth around Rs 3,400 crore was restricted during the last 11 state assembly elections. Kumar emphasized the challenges of muscle, money, misinformation, and Model Code of Conduct violations in conducting free and fair elections, asserting that the ECI has implemented measures to address these challenges effectively.
