Rights body condemns ‘murders through duty’ of Christian sanitation workers in Pakistan
Tragic Loss of Christian Sanitary Workers
Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) has strongly condemned the death of two Christian sanitary workers, Asif Masih (25) and Shan Masih (28), in Faisalabad district. The incident occurred as they were forced to clear a choked manhole without proper safety equipment, leading to their tragic demise.
Challenges Faced by Sanitary Workers
Naveed Walter, president of HRFP, highlighted the dire circumstances faced by sanitary workers, particularly those from the Christian community, who constitute 90% of the workforce in Faisalabad. He emphasized their vulnerability to exploitation and discrimination due to lack of recognition and inadequate pay.
Calls for Urgent Action
Despite advocacy efforts and a Writ Petition filed in Lahore High Court in 2015, seeking protection and provision of safety measures for sanitary workers, little progress has been made. HRFP urges immediate action from authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of sanitary workers, including the provision of essential equipment and social security measures for their families.
