Power Crisis in Jammu and Kashmir Deepens, Consumers Demand Relief
Escalating Power Woes for Local Consumers
The power crisis in Jammu and Kashmir is spiraling out of control, leaving local consumers in the lurch. Despite promises of round-the-clock electricity supply with the installation of smart meters in half of Srinagar city, residents are now enduring daily power cuts lasting a mere 4-5 hours. This frustrating situation has persisted for over two weeks, casting a shadow of uncertainty as winter approaches.
Government Initiatives and Hopes for a Brighter Future
Amidst the gloom, government authorities are actively seeking solutions to alleviate the power shortage in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Engineer of the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Javed Yousuf Dar, reveals ongoing discussions with entities such as NTPC to secure additional electricity for the region. The prospects of receiving extra power in the coming days raise hopes for a much-needed reprieve.

Debt and Environmental Factors Compound the Crisis
However, the chief engineer acknowledged an unsettling fact – a significant debt incurred from external electricity purchases. This financial burden adds to the complexities of resolving the power crisis. Furthermore, environmental factors, specifically low precipitation leading to reduced water levels in reservoirs, have hampered power generation at major plants. These challenges are contributing to the dire situation.
A Pledge to Overcome the Crisis
Despite the current turmoil, the Chief Engineer, KPDCL, remains optimistic. He assures residents that the issue is actively being addressed, with expectations of a resolution in the coming days. The government’s commitment to finding a solution provides a glimmer of hope for the beleaguered consumers.
Local consumers, however, remain skeptical, as they have borne the brunt of this crisis for an extended period. Their resilience and patience are being tested as they yearn for the return of stable electricity supply. The situation in Jammu and Kashmir remains fluid, with the power crisis hanging over the region like a dark cloud.
