Indian Ambassador to Kuwait, Adarsh Swaika, recently engaged with Kuwait Deputy Prime Minister Imad Mohammad Abdulaziz Al-Ateeqi to discuss and highlight the robust bilateral cooperation between India and Kuwait, particularly in the hydrocarbons sector. Emphasizing the potential for collaboration in both upstream and downstream sectors, Ambassador Swaika showcased the promising avenues for mutual growth and development.
Last month, Ambassador Swaika met with Kuwait’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Abdullah Hamad AlJouan, underscoring the ever-growing ties between the two nations. In their discussions, both leaders delved into the substantial potential for enhancing bilateral economic cooperation, with a focus on investments. This meeting signifies a continued commitment to fostering economic collaboration between India and Kuwait.

India and Kuwait share a long-standing and warm relationship, rooted in history and fortified by cultural affinities. With over a million Indians residing in Kuwait, the ties between the two countries have thrived, bolstered by geographic proximity and historical trade links. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs notes that until 1961, the Indian Rupee served as the legal tender in Kuwait, emphasizing the historical depth of their economic connections.
Historically, trade has been a cornerstone of Indo-Kuwaiti relations. India consistently ranks among Kuwait’s top ten trading partners, with bilateral trade amounting to USD 6.2 billion in 2015-16. India’s exports to Kuwait cover a diverse range of products, including food items, textiles, machinery, automobiles, and more.
India’s Ambassador to Kuwait actively engages with key Kuwaiti officials to foster cooperation in crucial sectors, showcasing a commitment to building on their shared history and creating new avenues for economic collaboration. The discussions on hydrocarbons and economic ties exemplify the countries’ dedication to nurturing and expanding their enduring friendship.
