India Sends Technical Personnel to Maldives Amid Diplomatic Tensions
In a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randir Jaiswal disclosed that the first batch of Indian technical personnel has arrived in the Maldives, specifically in Male, to replace existing personnel. This development comes in the midst of diplomatic tensions following a formal request from the Maldives government, led by Mohamed Muizzu, for India to withdraw its troops from Male.
The technical personnel will operate advanced light helicopters at Gan, replacing the previous team. India and Maldives have mutually agreed on solutions to ensure the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms, providing humanitarian and medical evacuation services.
Previously, President Muizzu had requested the withdrawal of Indian troops before March 15, aligning with the main election campaign of his party. Currently, around 70 Indian troops, along with maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters, are stationed in the Maldives.
MEA spokesperson Jaiswal emphasized that India remains a committed development partner for the Maldives, mentioning an increased budget of Rs 770.9 crore.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed confidence in resolving the issue through diplomacy. Speaking at ‘The Rise of the Global South’ event, he highlighted the humanitarian role of Indian military personnel and aviation platforms in the Maldives, primarily used for medical evacuation purposes.
Jaishankar acknowledged the ongoing discussions with the Maldivian side to address differences, emphasizing the need for understanding and resolution through diplomacy. He expressed optimism in resolving the matter, underscoring the shared commitment to finding a solution.
