MeT Predicts Widespread Light Rain, Snow in JK
The weather department in Jammu and Kashmir has issued a forecast predicting light rain and snow at “scattered to fairly widespread” places until forenoon on Tuesday. A meteorological department official mentioned that from February 28-29, the region can expect partly to generally cloudy weather with the possibility of light precipitation at isolated locations.

Starting from March 1 to March 3, there is a likelihood of light to moderate rain and snow at most places, with heavy precipitation expected at few middle and higher reaches on March 2 and 3. The official also warned of the possibility of thunder, lightning, hailstorm, and gusty winds during this period.

MeT Predicts Widespread Light Rain:Temperature Fluctuations Across the Region
Meanwhile, there have been notable fluctuations in night temperatures across various locations. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.0°C, showing a 2.0°C drop from the previous night and falling below normal for this time of the year. Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kokernag, Kupwara, and Gulmarg also experienced temperature variations, with some areas recording temperatures significantly below normal.

Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 7.9°C, below normal by 3.7°C for the winter capital of J&K. Other regions such as Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah reported varying temperatures as well. The diverse temperature readings indicate the complex weather patterns prevalent across the region.
While the 40-day harsh winter period known as ‘Chillai-Kalan’ concluded on January 29, and the subsequent 20-day-long winter period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ ended on February 19, Kashmir is currently experiencing the middle 10-day-long period known as ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold), culminating on March 1.
In summary, Jammu and Kashmir residents should brace themselves for unsettled weather conditions, with the possibility of precipitation, fluctuating temperatures, and the continuation of the winter transition period known as ‘Chillai-Bachha’.
