Arvind Kejriwal Admits Retweeting Allegedly Defamatory Video Was a Mistake
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal acknowledged before the Supreme Court that retweeting a video, considered defamatory and circulated by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in 2018, was a “mistake.” The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, directed the trial court to temporarily halt proceedings in the defamation case against Kejriwal.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief challenged the Delhi High Court’s February 5 order, which upheld the summons against him, stating that reposting alleged libelous content falls under defamation law.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, admitted the mistake and requested an adjournment before the trial court. He highlighted the swift prosecution against Kejriwal and emphasized the need for an adjournment. Justice Khanna remarked that Kejriwal need not appear in court at the moment given his official position.
The bench asked the complainant to consider closing the case based on Kejriwal’s admission of the mistake. The complainant’s advocate agreed to consult with the client, and the Supreme Court postponed the matter for further hearing on March 11. The bench ordered the trial court not to proceed with the case until then.
The defamation complaint stemmed from Kejriwal retweeting a video in 2018 by a YouTuber accusing the founder of a Twitter page, ‘I Support Narendra Modi,’ of acting like ‘BJP IT CELL Part-II.’ The founder filed a defamation complaint against Kejriwal in response to the retweet.
