Fire damages Historic Mosque in Kargil
In a tragic incident, one of the oldest Shia mosques in the Union Territory of Ladakh faced severe damage due to a fire just hours before the commencement of night prayers for ‘Shab-e-Barat’, officials reported on Monday.
Fire damages Historic Mosque:Swift Response Averts Wider Catastrophe
The Balti Bazar masjid, a significant historical and heritage site, witnessed a devastating fire outbreak at 6.15 pm on Sunday. The fire, believed to have originated from candles used for illumination during the upcoming ‘Shab-e-Barat’ prayers, swiftly consumed the entire structure, according to the fire and emergency services official. Fortunately, the prompt response of fire tenders managed to control the blaze within three hours, preventing damage to adjacent structures, including the ‘Imam Barah’ and nearby residential houses.

Fire damages Historic Mosque:Assessment Reveals Heritage Loss
Chairman-cum-Chief Executive Councillor, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, along with Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Shrikant Suse, visited the site to assess the extent of the damage. The mosque, known for its historical and heritage significance, suffered particularly on the first floor, resulting in the loss of assets and heritage antiques.

During the assessment, it was revealed that local residents urgently requested the covering of the rooftop with temporary sheets. Additionally, the mosque requires comprehensive restoration and reconstruction. Expressing concern, Akhoon emphasized the need for small fire extinguishers at the local level and pledged to address the matter with the Lieutenant Governor. He also assured the Mohalla committee that provisions would be made for solar panels for the mosque, taking into consideration their availability.

While expressing gratitude to the Army for their swift response and assistance with fire tenders, Akhoon acknowledged their role in disaster management activities. The CEC reassured the Mohalla committee of necessary measures for the reconstruction of the mosque, emphasizing the provision of solar panels and addressing immediate concerns raised by the local residents.
