Punjab CM Allocates ₹1 Crore and Offers Government Job to Family of Fallen Farm Protester
Tragic Loss Sparks Government Response
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced a significant financial aid package for the family of Shubh Karan Singh, a young farmer who lost his life during a recent clash with Haryana Police at the Khanauri border. The announcement, made on social media platform X, revealed that the state would provide ₹1 crore to the grieving family. Additionally, Mann stated that a government job would be offered to Shubh Karan’s younger sister, recognizing the need for support in the aftermath of this tragic incident.
First Casualty in Ongoing Farmer Protests
Shubh Karan Singh, a 21-year-old protester, had been actively involved in the 2020-21 farm protests. Unfortunately, he became the first casualty during the recent police action at Khanauri border. The circumstances surrounding his death, allegedly caused by a “bullet,” remain unclear as officials have not specified whether it was a rubber or a live bullet. The uncertainty surrounding his demise is further complicating the ongoing negotiations between the government and the protesting farmers.
Protesters Halt March Amidst Grief
Following Shubh Karan’s death, the farmer leaders decided to suspend their march for two days. Expressing their grief and solidarity, they have refused to allow the post-mortem of Shubh Karan’s body. Their primary demands include financial assistance to the victim’s family, a government job for his sister, and the registration of a case against the Haryana Police. The absence of concrete assurances on these fronts has led the farmers to refrain from cremating Shubh Karan, emphasizing the gravity of their demands.
Farmers Stand Firm in Quest for Justice
Sarwan Singh Pandher, the coordinator of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, stated that the march to Delhi would be put on hold until Friday. The decision stems from concerns over the well-being of protesters injured in the police action and the need for resolution regarding the compensation, treatment, and cremation of Shubh Karan Singh. The farmer leaders remain resolute in their pursuit of justice, holding firm until their demands are addressed by the authorities.
