Jammu-Srinagar National Highway Blocked for second day
February 20: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a critical lifeline, continues to face a severe blockade for the second consecutive day due to landslides affecting over a dozen locations in the Ramban district. Traffic department officials are urging caution and advising against travel until further updates are provided.
Nature’s Wrath Unleashed: Multiple Landslides Disrupt Key Highway Sections
The strategic stretch of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) grapples with a crisis as landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones from hillocks plague areas such as Dalwas, Peerha, near Peerha Tunnel, Mehad-Cafeteria, Jaiswal bridge, Trishul Morh, and several others. The challenging weather conditions exacerbate road clearance operations, compounded by the persistent rains that have hampered efforts for the third straight day.
Blocked Corridor: Road Clearance Operations Stalled by Persistent Rainfall
The intricate process of clearing the highway is further complicated by the unrelenting rainfall, which has led to blockages at critical points like Monkey Morh, Mom Passi, Gangroo, Hingni Marog, Kishtwari Pather, Shalghari Rampari, Tabela, and Chamalwas. Travelers are strongly advised to stay updated on the situation, and officials emphasize the necessity of avoiding the Jammu-Srinagar route for the time being.
Weather Woes: Rainfall Data Highlights Intensity Across Regions
Meteorological records reveal the severity of the situation, with Banihal town along the highway experiencing a staggering 83.6 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday. Bhaderwah in Doda district witnessed 58.8 mm of rainfall, Batote in Ramban recorded 49.6 mm, and Katra town, serving as the base camp for Mata Vaishno Devi shrine pilgrims, received 16.2 mm during the same timeframe. The forecast indicates widespread rains at most places, with isolated rains expected until February 25, except on February 23.
As the highway blockade persists, authorities are working tirelessly to address the challenges posed by nature’s fury, urging residents and travelers to exercise caution and remain informed about the evolving situation.
