Alaskapox Virus Claims First Victim in Alaska
Health officials in Alaska have reported the first death linked to the recently identified Alaskapox virus.
The victim, an elderly immunocompromised man from the Kenai Peninsula, died in late January.
Alaskapox is an orthopox virus related to cowpox, monkeypox, and smallpox.
The man, who lived alone and had not recently traveled, may have contracted the virus from a house cat that regularly killed small mammals.
Alaskapox symptoms include skin lesions, enlarged lymph nodes, and joint or muscle discomfort.
While there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission, precautions are advised for those with skin lesions.
