Sri Lankan Navy Apprehends 19 Tamil Nadu Fishermen and Two Boats
The Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 19 fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram along with two boats near Delft Island in Palk Bay Sea. The incident occurred while the fishermen were engaged in fishing activities. The arrested individuals were taken to the Kangesanthurai Naval Camp for further investigation.
Ongoing Concerns Over Fishermen Arrests and Boat Seizures
This incident adds to the ongoing concerns regarding the arrest of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. The frequent arrests have raised alarm not only at the Central government level but also among authorities in Tamil Nadu. Fishermen from Rameswaram had previously declared their grievances, staging a symbolic strike on February 5, outlining demands for the release of seized boats, compensation for damages, and other pressing issues.
Appeal for Government Intervention and Fishermen’s Demands
The fishermen have appealed to both the central and state governments for immediate intervention to secure the release and restoration of seized boats. Over 150 mechanised boats from Tamil Nadu, seized between 2018 and 2024, are reportedly still in the possession of the Sri Lankan government. The demands include adequate compensation for damaged vessels, permission for rescue teams to retrieve boats held by the Sri Lankan Navy, and swift government action to address their concerns. The issue had previously been discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe in July last year.
