Islamabad: The upcoming General Elections in 2024 are poised to be the costliest polls in Pakistan’s history, with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) estimating expenditures at Rs42 billion. This figure represents a 26 percent increase compared to the expenses incurred during the last general elections.

Sources within the ECP reveal that when factoring in the expenses for security measures and other arrangements undertaken by provincial governments, the total cost of the general elections is expected to surpass Rs49 billion.

Scheduled for February 8, all preparations have been finalized for the elections, with political parties and independent candidates making concerted efforts to persuade voters. The initial budget allocated for the elections stands at 42 billion rupees, marking a 26 percent rise compared to the 2018 elections and establishing it as the most expensive electoral process in Pakistan’s history.

The majority of the election budget is allocated for the printing of ballot papers, deployment of law enforcement agencies, and remuneration for polling staff. The ECP successfully completed the printing of 260 million ballot papers for all constituencies across the country on February 4. This figure reflects a notable 54.74% increase in the number of candidates compared to the 2018 elections. Despite a 195% surge in the demand for special paper, effective management resulted in a reduction from 2400 tonnes to 2177 tonnes.

In preparation for the general elections on February 8, the Election Commission of Pakistan has established 92,000 polling stations nationwide. According to sources from ARY News, a total of 92,353 polling stations will be set up across the country.

The draft scheme prepared by the ECP outlines that for the general elections, Punjab will have 52,412 polling stations, with 6,040 declared highly sensitive and 15,617 declared sensitive. In Sindh, 4,718 polling stations are classified as normal, 6,576 as sensitive, and 7,802 as highly sensitive. Additionally, Balochistan will see 5,015 polling stations established for the upcoming elections.
