Hindu Kush Himalaya Region Faces Imminent Collapse, Urgent Action Needed, Say Scientists
At the Third Lead Authors meeting of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) in Kathmandu, Nepal, scientists from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) declared the Hindu Kush Himalaya region on the brink of collapse.
Describing the losses in biodiversity and habitat as catastrophic, experts called for bold action and urgent finance to prevent further nature loss in the region. The Hindu Kush Himalaya spans eight countries and is considered one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth.
The ongoing crisis, marked by accelerating losses in nature, poses a threat not only to animal and plant life but also to human societies in the region.
IPBES Nexus Assessment Aims to Address Complex Relationships
The IPBES nexus assessment, conducted for the first time in South Asia, focuses on understanding the intricate relationships between biodiversity, water, food, health, and climate change.
With over 130 global experts convening in Kathmandu, the assessment aims to enhance understanding and identify options for improved policies, fostering collaboration across related sectors.
The urgency expressed by scientists underscores the need for immediate action to reverse nature loss and species extinction in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region.
Note: The IPBES nexus assessment meeting is ongoing, with a summary for policymakers scheduled for February 10-11.
