Ladakh Historic Gold Amidst Mixed Outcomes at Khelo India Winter Games
The Khelo India Winter Games witnessed a day of contrasting fortunes for the hosts, Ladakh. On a positive note, Ladakh secured a historic gold in the women’s short track 1600m relay at the NDS sports complex, marking their first-ever triumph in the event. However, the men’s ice-hockey team faced a formidable opponent in ITBP and suffered a 0-4 defeat in the semi-final.
The other semi-final clash between Army and Himachal Pradesh was significantly one-sided, with Army emerging victorious with a commanding 10-2 scoreline. The key contributors to Army’s success were Konchok Namgail, who netted three goals, and Rigzin Norboo, who scored two.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra continued to make its mark by adding two more gold medals in skating, bringing their total tally to three. Despite this, Karnataka maintained their lead in the overall standings with four gold medals.
Maharashtra’s triumphs on the day came in the men’s short track (1600m) relay and the mixed short track relay over the same distance. The dominance of Maharashtra in relay events was evident, as their skaters had amassed a total of 13 silver and bronze medals out of a possible 22. With eleven gold medals already decided in the Games, Maharashtra’s prowess in relays remained unquestionable.
Ladakh’s historic gold in the women’s short track relay provided a refreshing moment on a cold day. Despite overnight snowfall, the NDS groundstaff successfully prepared the rink for the skating competition. The Ladakh quartet comprising Skarma Tsultim, Insha Fatima, Tasnia Shamim, and Padma Angmo delivered an outstanding performance, clocking 3:55.80 and securing the gold, relegating Maharashtra (4:17.12) to the second position by a decent margin.
