    Himachal Pradesh Police conducted a successful rescue operation to save 300 tourists stranded near the South Portal (SP) of the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang. Heavy snowfall on Tuesday evening trapped around 50 vehicles, including an HRTC bus. Kullu SP Sakshi Verma, along with a dedicated team, including SDM Manali, Tehsildar Manali, and SHO Manali, ensured the safe evacuation of all tourists.

    Weather Warnings and Orange Alert

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for various places in Himachal Pradesh, signaling the possibility of snowfall in higher mountains and rain in other areas over the next 48 hours. The alert covers Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Mandi, and Shimla districts. From January 30 to February 2, heavy rain or snowfall is anticipated, with moderate to heavy snowfall expected in specific districts.

    Meteorological Insights and Safety Measures

    Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at IMD, highlighted the weather forecast, indicating rain and snow in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh. Moderate to heavy snowfall is projected in Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Kullu districts. An orange alert has been issued for these areas, while rain and thunderstorms, along with lightning activities, are expected in Kangra, Bilaspur, and Shimla districts. The rescue operation near Atal Tunnel underscores the need for heightened safety measures during adverse weather conditions in the region.
