Ladakh Gets 17 New Tehsils to Strengthen Local Governance
Leh, July 12, 201l26 [VoM News]: In a major administrative boost, seventeen new tehils have been added to the the Union Territory of Ladakh.
The development came into sight after Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved a major overhaul of the region’s revenue administration.
After this deveolpment, now the total number of tehsils have increased from 15 to 32.
It has been said the aim of increasing the numbers is aimed at improving governance and bringing government services closer to people, particularly in remote areas.
This restructuring as per administrative part will ensure that every revenue village falls under a single tehsil and each tehsil is linked to only one district, ending long-standing jurisdictional overlaps.
Under the revised structure, Leh district will have five tehsils, Kargil seven, Changthang four, Nubra six, Zanskar four, Sham five and Drass one.
The Lieutenant Governor said the decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of developing Ladakh after it became a Union Territory in 2019.
He stated that the new administrative framework is expected to improve service delivery, strengthen grassroots governance and speed up the implementation of development and welfare programmes, and will reduce the administrative distances for residents of far-flung and border areas.
Now, the access to public services would be easier, and will create a more efficient revenue administration, improve coordination between district and tehsil authorities, and ensure quicker disposal of public grievances.
