Putin Officially Nominated for Presidential Elections Amid Limited Opposition
Russia has officially recognized Vladimir Putin as a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in March, a move widely expected to secure his victory. Putin, who has been in power since the early 2000s, faces limited opposition in a political landscape where dissent is nearly nonexistent. The Central Election Commission registered Putin, who self-nominated, along with Putin-loyalist Leonid Slutsky. The election, scheduled from March 15 to 17, has raised concerns about transparency due to its three-day duration.
Controversy Surrounds Extended Power And Election Transparency
Following a contentious constitutional reform in 2020, Putin has the potential to remain in power until 2036. Critics argue that past elections were marred by irregularities, and independent observers may face challenges in monitoring the vote. Despite the limited political landscape, liberal challenger Boris Nadezhdin has met the signature threshold for registration. However, it remains uncertain if he will be allowed to run, with the Kremlin dismissing him as a serious rival.
