The Congress has welcomed the posthumous award of Bharat Ratna to former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur, emphasizing his role as a champion of social justice. However, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also criticizes the Modi government, calling the decision reflective of desperation and hypocrisy. Ramesh suggests that conducting a nationwide caste census would be a fitting tribute to Thakur and highlights Rahul Gandhi’s consistent advocacy for this cause.

    Jairam Ramesh’s Statement

In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh expresses the Congress’s welcome for the Bharat Ratna conferred on Jannayak Karpoori Thakur. He labels “Bhagidari Nyay” as one of the pillars of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and stresses the need for a nationwide caste census as a starting point. Ramesh notes that Rahul Gandhi has consistently advocated for this, but the Modi government has refused to release the results of the Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011 and has not committed to conducting an updated nationwide caste census.

    Karpoori Thakur’s Legacy

Karpoori Thakur, known as ‘Jan Nayak’ (people’s leader), served as Bihar chief minister twice and played a pivotal role in enforcing total prohibition of alcohol in 1970. The Congress sees the award as a recognition of his contribution to social justice, while simultaneously pointing out the government’s reluctance on the caste census issue.
