Iran Executes Protester Convicted of Attacking Police during 2022 Protests
Iran has executed Mohammad Ghobadlou, who was convicted of running over and killing a police officer and injuring five others during nationwide protests in 2022. The protests erupted following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. Ghobadlou’s conviction faced challenges from human rights activists, arguing that he did not receive a fair trial. Despite a Supreme Court stay of execution and a mental health evaluation, the death penalty was upheld. Ghobadlou’s case adds to concerns about fair trials and the use of capital punishment in the context of protests in Iran.
Protests Triggered by Death in Custody
Widespread demonstrations ensued in 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish-Iranian woman in police custody. The unrest led to casualties, including a police officer allegedly killed by Ghobadlou, who was subsequently sentenced to death for “corruption on earth.” The government characterized the protests as “riots” orchestrated by foreigners.
Controversial Execution amid Rights Concerns
Ghobadlou’s execution marks the eighth death sentence carried out against individuals involved in violence against security personnel during the 2022 protests. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, criticized the trial’s fairness, pointing to Ghobadlou’s bipolar diagnosis that was allegedly not adequately considered. The case highlights ongoing human rights concerns in Iran and the government’s response to dissent.
