India to Auction Lithium Reserves in Jammu and Kashmir: A Game-Changer for EV Industry.
Foreign Interest Sparks Hope.
India is on the verge of a significant development in its quest for securing a crucial raw material for electric vehicle (EV) battery production. Earlier this year, the nation unearthed an estimated 5.9 million tonnes of lithium deposits in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Now, the stage is set for an auction that has garnered the attention of foreign mining companies eager to partake in this burgeoning industry.
KABIL Ventures into International Lithium Acquisition
In addition to the impending auction, it has been disclosed that Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL), a state-owned joint venture specializing in global mineral exploration, is in the final stages of acquiring lithium reserves in Argentina. This strategic move underscores India’s commitment to diversifying its sources of lithium, a vital component in the green energy revolution. Furthermore, preliminary discussions have commenced with the Chilean government regarding potential lithium reserves, although these negotiations are still in their infancy.
India’s Global Push for Resource Security
India, a notable contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, is actively forging agreements with resource-rich nations such as Australia, Argentina, and Chile to guarantee a steady supply of essential minerals. The recent discovery of 5.9 million tonnes of inferred lithium resources by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in the Salal-Haimana region of Jammu & Kashmir’s Reasi district holds immense significance in the context of worldwide efforts to transition toward more environmentally friendly practices.

Expanding Lithium Exploration Efforts
Moreover, the GSI is not stopping at this groundbreaking discovery. The organization is gearing up for further exploration activities in Jammu & Kashmir to identify additional lithium reserves.
Following the initial exploration in the Salal-Haimana region of Reasi district, GSI has initiated a subsequent reconnaissance G4 stage exploration program for lithium and related minerals in the Panasa-Dugga-Baldhanun-Chakar-Sangarmarg (Saro-da-Bas) area of Reasi district during the current field season of 2022-23, with ongoing work in progress.
