Sri Lanka’s Catholic Church Plans to Declare Easter Sunday Bombing Victims as Saints
On the fifth anniversary of the 2019 Easter Sunday suicide bombings, Sri Lanka’s Catholic Church, led by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, announced its intention to move towards declaring all 273 victims, including 11 Indians, as saints.
The decision comes after the completion of the required 5-year period since the tragic attacks carried out by local Islamist extremists linked to ISIS.
On April 21, 2019, suicide bombers targeted churches and luxury hotels, resulting in the loss of lives. Cardinal Ranjith emphasized that those who perished did so for their beliefs and faith in Christ.
Over the past five years, he has been critical of the government’s investigations into the attacks, advocating for international scrutiny.
The government asserts ongoing legal proceedings and hundreds of arrests in connection with the bombings.
The move towards sainthood involves a lengthy process within the Catholic Church.
