Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin to Inaugurate Jallikattu Arena in Keelakarai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is scheduled to inaugurate a newly constructed Jallikattu arena in Keelakarai, Madurai district, on January 24, 2024. The inauguration will be followed by a Jallikattu competition, adhering to government guidelines.

To participate in Jallikattu, bull tamers and bull owners must update their names through the madurai.nic.in website by January 19, 2024. Bull tamers registering online are required to provide their fitness certificate. Only the bull owner and one person with the bull will be allowed to participate in the competition. Tokens for bull tamers will be issued after verifying their certificates.

Jallikattu is a traditional event celebrated during Pongal in Tamil Nadu. In the sport, participants attempt to grab the large hump on a released bull’s back to bring it to a stop. Despite concerns about injury risks to participants and bulls, the Supreme Court upheld the Tamil Nadu government’s law allowing Jallikattu in the state in May 2023, after prolonged protests against the ban.

The upcoming inauguration and Jallikattu competition underscore the cultural significance and continued celebration of this traditional sport in Tamil Nadu.
