Delhi Shivers in Coldest Night Yet, Red Alert Issued for Dense Fog and Cold Wave
Delhi experienced the coldest night of the winter season for the second consecutive day, with the temperature dropping to 3.6 degrees Celsius, deviating 3.8 degrees below the normal minimum temperature. The Meteorological Department issued a red alert due to the prevailing cold and dense fog conditions in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Last night, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 3.9 degrees Celsius, maintaining the grip of cold wave conditions over the Delhi-NCR region.
Weather-related conditions in Delhi and various parts of the country caused delays of 1-6 hours for eighteen trains bound for Delhi. The Delhi airport also witnessed several flight delays due to low visibility amid dense fog. According to the India Meteorological Department, the visibility at Safdarjung Observatory, the main weather station in Delhi, was only 200 meters at 5:30 am. Visuals depicted a thick layer of fog covering several parts of the national capital in the morning.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded at 365 at 9 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good,’ while 401 and 500 are categorized as ‘severe.’
The IMD issued a red alert for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, while a yellow alert was issued for Rajasthan due to the cold and foggy conditions. The weather department extended the yellow alert for the next three days in Delhi, as cold wave conditions are expected to persist. The maximum temperature for the day is predicted to settle around 19 degrees Celsius, as reported by the IMD.
The IMD also mentioned that dense to very dense fog was reported in isolated parts of Punjab and East Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, dense fog was recorded in isolated pockets over Haryana, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Gangetic West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh. Moderate fog was observed in isolated pockets over Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh.
