Following his recent retirement from Test cricket, Australian batter David Warner made a spirited return to the field in the Big Bash League (BBL) during the Sydney Smash between Thunder and Sixers. Warner, who had bid farewell to Test cricket at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) earlier this month, made a grand entrance to the BBL game by arriving in a helicopter. In the opposing dugout, Warner’s Australia teammate, Steve Smith, awaited the challenge as the Sixers took on the Thunder.

The rivalry between the two teams was palpable, with the Sixers having secured victory in their last four encounters with the Thunder. As the Thunder won the toss and opted to field, an amusing exchange unfolded between Warner and Smith. While Smith prepared to face the first ball, Warner engaged in some lighthearted sledging to distract his compatriot.

“Nah, that’s not the center, a little bit to the right. Mate, if you open the batting, you’ve got to mark it properly. Nah, he’s locked in,” Warner playfully added as Smith took his guard.

Warner’s comments elicited laughter from the commentators, and the tactical move seemed to work as Smith was caught out on the first ball off Daniel Sams. However, Smith had the last laugh as the Sixers clinched their fifth consecutive victory against the Thunder.

In pursuit of a target of 152 runs, the retired Test opener, Warner, scored 37 runs from 39 balls on the slow SCG wicket. Unfortunately, he lacked support from his teammates, and the Thunder were eventually all out for 132 in the final over. While Warner had been the retiring hero at the SCG the previous week, veteran Sixers spinner Steve O’Keefe shone in his last home regular-season match, taking 3-13.

The defeat dealt a blow to the Thunder’s slim chances of reaching the finals, confirming the Sixers’ spot in the BBL finals. Presently, the Sixers stand second in the table with 12 points, trailing the unbeaten leaders, Brisbane Heat, by four points. On the other hand, the Thunder find themselves second from the bottom with just one win in eight matches.
