Severe Cold Wave Grips North India, Disrupts Daily Life
A relentless cold wave maintains its hold over North India, causing dense fog that significantly reduces visibility and disrupts air and train travel. Delhi, experiencing a bone-chilling 8.8-degree Celsius temperature, is shrouded in fog, impacting the city’s transportation networks. Palam Observatory reported a visibility level of 100 meters at 5:30 am, gradually improving to 500 meters by 7 am due to surface winds.
Safdarjung weather station recorded a minimum of 5.8 degrees Celsius, showing a departure of 1.6 degrees Celsius from the previous day. Other areas, such as Palam and Lodi Road, registered temperatures of 7.2 and 5.6 degrees Celsius, respectively. The Ridge recorded a minimum of 6.2 degrees Celsius, while Ayanagar plunged to a bone-chilling 6 degrees Celsius.
The homeless seek refuge in shelters to escape the harsh cold, and visuals from Anand Vihar depict people huddled around bonfires for warmth. In Srinagar, temperatures dipped to minus 5 degrees Celsius, while tragically, in Motihari district, Bihar, a sixth-grade student lost his life due to the extreme cold.
Mount Abu, nestled in the Aravalli hills, experiences a sudden drop in temperature, plummeting from +4°C to a bone-chilling -3°C in just two days. This swift change blankets the hill station in snow, creating a wintery scene. Sikar district in Rajasthan records a freezing minus 0.5 degrees Celsius at Fatehpur Agricultural Research Centre, prompting residents to gather around bonfires for relief.
Meteorologists warn of harsher conditions in the coming days. Thick fog engulfs over 40 districts in Madhya Pradesh, disrupting daily life. The India Meteorological Department forecasts continued dense fog in isolated pockets of northwest India for the next three to four days, with cold day to severe cold day conditions likely to persist.
Rail travel is affected, with several trains running late due to fog. The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar issues a warning for shallow to moderate fog in parts of Odisha. The overall scenario underscores the challenges posed by the intense cold wave, impacting various facets of life across the affected regions.
