Virat Kohli Makes Cricket History, Becomes the First Player to Accumulate 2000 Runs in Seven Consecutive Years
In a cricketing milestone that etches Virat Kohli’s name in history, the formidable batsman has become the first player to accumulate 2000 runs in seven different calendar years. This remarkable feat unfolded during India’s challenging encounter against South Africa in the 1st Test, culminating in a crushing defeat on Thursday.
Despite India succumbing to the precision pace of South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Nandre Burger within three days, Virat Kohli showcased his batting prowess. While other batsmen struggled against the lethal pace trio, Kohli exhibited resilience, accumulating runs through quick singles and boundaries. His commendable innings of 76 off 82 balls in the 1st Test’s innings and 32-run loss brought his 2023 run tally to an impressive 2006.
Kohli had previously achieved the 2000-run milestone in calendar years 2012 (2186 runs), 2014 (2286 runs), 2016 (2595 runs), 2017 (2818 runs), 2018 (2735 runs), and 2019 (2455 runs).
Day 3 of the match witnessed India’s struggles, with skipper Rohit Sharma’s woes against Kagiso Rabada continuing as he fell for an eight-ball duck, marking his seventh dismissal in 11 innings against Rabada. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill faced challenges, and Marco Jansen’s delivery accounted for Gill’s departure at 26(37).
South Africa further tightened their grip on the match by swiftly dismissing Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. Ravichandran Ashwin’s dismissal for a golden duck by Nandre Burger added to India’s woes. A standout moment occurred when Jasprit Bumrah was run out, courtesy of Dean Elgar’s brilliant fielding effort.
The match concluded on a somber note for India as Prasidh Krishna struggled against Marco Jansen, leading to Kohli’s dismissal at 76 and ultimately sealing India’s fate within the first three days of the test match.
