Kohima, Nagaland: A devastating accident claimed the lives of eight individuals when an SUV plunged into a gorge following a collision with a goods vehicle in Nagaland’s Tseminyu district. This heart-wrenching incident unfolded near K Station village, approximately 65 kilometers away from the state capital, Kohima, during the early hours of Wednesday, as reported by a senior police officer.
Collision Leads to Tragic Outcome
The collision was of such magnitude that not only did the SUV meet its unfortunate fate in the gorge, but the goods vehicle also slipped off the road, ultimately falling onto the SUV. The SUV was en route from Kohima to Mokokchung, while the sand-laden truck was headed towards Kohima from Merapani when this horrific accident occurred, revealed Tseminyu Additional SP and PRO Lanu Aier.
Fatal Consequences and Ongoing Investigation
Regrettably, seven individuals lost their lives at the scene of the accident, and one succumbed to injuries while being transported to the hospital. The impact of the collision was so severe that it caused the SUV to be dragged along the highway before it plunged several feet below. The sand-laden truck, bearing the weight of its cargo, completely crushed the SUV, trapping all passengers inside.
An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of this tragic accident. Among the victims were three women who had recently received appointment letters to join the government service as grade-3 personnel after successfully clearing the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) examination. The deceased included six women and two men, including the SUV driver.
Immediate Response and Condolences
In response to this heartrending incident, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed his condolences and announced an ex-gratia amount of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. He extended his deepest sympathies to the grieving families.
The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) also conveyed its profound sorrow over the tragedy. In a statement, NSF President Medovi Rhi said, “In this difficult hour, our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends who have been profoundly affected by this tragedy.
Though words cannot adequately express the sorrow we feel for the untimely and devastating loss of these young lives. We share in the grief as we remember their promising futures, their dreams, and their potential which have been tragically cut short.”
