Outcry and Demand for Justice Grow After Police Encounter
Faridabad, Haryana: In a development that has sent shockwaves through the region, a sub-inspector and his team found themselves in hot water after a controversial police encounter resulted in the death of a man. The family of the deceased has accused the police of murder, leading to their legal troubles. This incident has unfolded just three days after the fateful encounter took place and a day following a highly charged panchayat meeting at Pakhal village. During the meeting, demands were made for the filing of a murder case against the police officers involved, and prominent political figures were drawn into the matter.
An FIR (First Information Report) has been officially registered against Sub-Inspector Rakesh Kumar, the head of Sector 48’s crime unit, and his team. They have been charged under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The FIR was filed at the Dhauj police station, as confirmed by Sube Singh, the spokesperson of the Faridabad Police.
The deceased, identified as Balraj, also known as Balwinder or Ballu, hailed from Pavata Mahabatabad village and had a criminal record, being wanted by the police in multiple cases of robbery. The fatal encounter occurred on a Saturday when Balraj was shot dead, while two of his associates were arrested shortly after the incident.
Amidst rising tension, villagers from Mahabatabad village convened a panchayat meeting at nearby Pakhal village on Monday morning. Their central demand was the registration of a murder case against the police officers involved. During this meeting, a 35-member committee was formed, and senior Congress leader Vijay Pratap Singh contacted Police Commissioner Rakesh Kumar Arya, insisting on filing a murder case against the accused officers.
Subsequently, the villagers sought support from Union Minister of State Krishnapal Gurjar, who assured them that justice would prevail. A judicial inquiry, led by Judicial Magistrate Naurang Sharma, has been ordered to investigate the matter. However, the family of the deceased has been adamant in their demand for an FIR to be filed prior to the post-mortem examination. Finally, on Tuesday, their demand was met as the FIR was officially registered.
The police’s perspective on the matter states that the Crime Branch of Sector 48 received information late on Saturday night regarding Balraj and his associates planning to commit a crime. In response, a police team pursued the trio in their car and instructed them to halt. When the suspects failed to comply and instead opened fire on the Crime Branch team, a bullet struck a police vehicle. Balraj was subsequently shot during the exchange of fire, leading to his tragic demise, while his associates were apprehended.
This incident triggered a public outcry, with Balraj’s family and fellow villagers gathering at Badshah Khan Hospital to allege foul play and insist that he was a victim of murder. Balraj, a man with a history of involvement in four cases of robbery and snatching, had been married for eight years and leaves behind three children and other family members. His accomplices have been identified as Anup, alias Chaliya, a resident of Dabua colony, and Arvind, a resident of Rajiv colony, both in Faridabad. Anup, alias Chaliya, had previously been incarcerated for the murder of Naresh Bhakri and was out on bail at the time of the encounter.
