The winter vacation schedule for Degree Colleges in Jammu and Kashmir has been officially announced by the government, adopting a phased approach that kicks off on December 27.

Alok Kumar, the Principal Secretary of the Higher Education Department, disclosed that Government Degree Colleges in the Kashmir region will observe the winter break until February 14, 2024. Simultaneously, all Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) in the Jammu division within the Winter Zone will also commence winter vacations from December 27, aligning their schedule with degree colleges in the Kashmir division. Notably, GDCs in the Jammu division categorized under the Summer Zone will observe vacations from January 1 to January 10, 2024.

Addressing the challenges posed by the early onset of winter, the Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Department had earlier instructed the commencement of online classes in government degree colleges in the Kashmir region from December 1, 2023. Dr. Ravi Shanker Sharma, Special Secretary to the government, underscored the difficulties faced by students in commuting and attending physical classes due to inadequate heating arrangements, stating, “The situation has been compounded due to disruption to normal class work with inadequate heating arrangements.”

In order to ensure a seamless academic delivery despite adverse and extremely cold conditions, a communication was issued emphasizing that Principals of Government Degree Colleges in the Kashmir Division should conduct classes online from December 1, 2023, until December 31, 2023, or until the announcement of winter vacations, whichever occurs earlier.
