    MeT: Kashmir Expects Snowfall on Dec 16 from Western Disturbance

    A weak Western Disturbance (WD) is anticipated to impact the region on December 16, potentially leading to a brief episode of snowfall at isolated higher elevations in the Kashmir valley, as per officials on Tuesday.

    The meteorological office reported a slight improvement in minimum temperatures attributed to the approaching feeble Western Disturbance. This disturbance is expected to bring about a short period of very light snowfall at isolated extreme higher elevations in the northern and northeastern parts of the Kashmir division during the night of December 16.

    The Meteorological Department forecasts dry weather with severe cold conditions persisting across most areas in Jammu and Kashmir until December 21. Additionally, they mentioned that “shallow to moderate fog is also likely to continue at many places in the Kashmir division.

    “Following the season’s coldest night at -4.8°C on Monday, Srinagar observed a low of -1.5°C on Tuesday, which was 0.5°C below the normal temperature for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.

    The maximum temperature in Srinagar was 0.4°C higher than the previous day, recording 0.4°C above the normal of 10.6°C.Pahalgam experienced a low of -1.5°C, marking an increase from the -4.7°C recorded the previous night and was 2.3°C above normal for the popular south Kashmir tourist destination.

    Qazigund, situated on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, recorded a low of 2.6°C, contrasting with the -3.4°C recorded the night before. Meanwhile, Kokernag registered a low of 2.3°C compared to the 2.4°C recorded a day ago.

    The minimum temperature at the renowned ski resort of Gulmarg saw a slight improvement at -3.5°C, compared to -3.6°C recorded a day earlier, and was 0.7°C above normal for the famous North Kashmir ski resort.

    Kupwara recorded a temperature of -2.4°C, in contrast to the -4.0°C recorded the previous night, with the temperature being 0.7°C below normal for the northern Kashmir district, according to the Meteorological Department.
