National Museum’s Demolition Not Decided, Reddy Tells Lok Sabha
Union Minister for Culture G Kishan Reddy stated in the Lok Sabha on Monday that no decision had been made concerning the demolition of the National Museum.
Reddy clarified that instead of demolition, plans were underway to extensively renovate and refurbish the South Block and North Block, aiming to utilize them as the National Museum.
The response came following a query posed by Congress’s Manish Tewari regarding the proposed demolition and the rationale behind relocating the museum to older Grade-1 heritage buildings.
Tewari raised concerns about the seismic safety of the artefacts in these buildings.
Reddy emphasized that no decision regarding the demolition was imminent.
He assured that adequate standard protocols for packaging, storage, preservation, and safety of the artefacts would be meticulously implemented as per expert advice.
The National Museum, housing ancient artefacts and being a significant modern landmark in the capital, presently accommodates around 2,00,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of Indian cultural heritage.
Reddy’s statement indicated the Centre’s commitment to preserve and handle the artefacts responsibly.
The redevelopment of the Central Vista includes plans for a new Parliament building, a common Central Secretariat for ministries, and the revitalization of the Rajpath.
Although the new Parliament building has been inaugurated and is now operational, decisions about the National Museum’s fate are yet to be finalized amidst discussions about its potential relocation and renovation.
