Traffic Disruption on Vital Route
Train traffic on the crucial Mumbai-Ahmedabad route has been severely disrupted, with a nearly 11-hour halt, since Sunday night. The reason behind this disruption is the Narmada river flowing above the danger mark between Bharuch and Ankleshwar stations in Gujarat, as confirmed by the Western Railway on Monday.
Nature of Disruption
The interruption in train traffic occurred when Narmada river waters surged above the danger mark at brigade no.502 at approximately 11:50 pm on Sunday. Although the river’s water level has begun to recede, it still remains above the danger mark.
Impact on Passengers and Goods Transport
As a result of this flooding, all passenger and goods trains on both sides of the river have come to a standstill. The stranded passengers are not left without assistance; arrangements are in place to provide refreshments, tea, and water to those stranded onboard.
Anticipated Improvement
Western Railway estimates that the water level may gradually fall below the danger mark within a couple of hours. To facilitate passengers and provide them with updated train-related information, helpline numbers have been set up.
Cancellations Due to Flooding
The disruption has led to the cancellation of at least one-and-a-half dozen trains, including prominent services like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Tejas Express and Shatabdi Express.
Heavy Rainfall and Flooding in Gujarat
The disruption was triggered by heavy rainfall in various parts of Gujarat on Sunday. This resulted in the flooding of low-lying areas and the isolation of several villages. The swelling of rivers, including the Narmada, posed significant challenges for the affected regions.
