Taliban’s Interior Minister on Afghanistan’s Governance and Challenges
Afghanistan’s Taliban-appointed acting Interior Minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani, recently emphasized that the country’s governance now rests with religious scholars, who, he believes, understand Afghanistan’s interests and priorities. This statement was reported by TOLO News, an Afghan news channel based in Kabul.
Haqqani’s Meeting with Islamic Scholars
In a meeting with scholars from Islamic countries, Haqqani discussed various issues including security, economic stability, and construction within Afghanistan. He also highlighted the Taliban’s efforts against narcotics, including the production, cultivation, smuggling of drugs, and the treatment of drug addicts.
Taliban’s Achievements and Spokesman’s Remarks
Abdul Mateen Qani, the spokesman for the Taliban-appointed ministry, claimed that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has made significant progress in the past two years. He cited advancements in combating narcotics, treating addiction, fighting corruption, ensuring nationwide security, and promoting stability and economic growth.
Political Analysts’ Views on the Delegation’s Visit
Some political analysts see the visit of the delegation of Islamic countries as potentially beneficial in addressing Afghanistan’s challenges. Khalil Ahmad Nadim, a political analyst, suggested that it is the duty of Islamic countries and the international community to focus on Afghanistan and influence the current government’s approach. However, Sayed Javad Sajadi, another analyst, expressed skepticism, doubting that the visit would lead to any significant change in the Taliban’s behavior.
Context of the Situation
These developments come amid the broader context of Afghanistan’s governance under the Taliban, following their takeover in 2021. The country has faced numerous challenges, including issues related to human rights, international recognition, economic stability, and security concerns. The engagement of Islamic scholars and international delegations with the Taliban government indicates ongoing efforts to address these complex challenges.
