BRICS Nations to Hold Extraordinary Meeting on Gaza Crisis
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to host a virtual Extraordinary Joint Meeting of the BRICS group of nations, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This meeting underscores the group’s commitment to addressing global issues.
UN Secretary General’s Participation
In a significant development, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres will participate in the virtual meeting, highlighting the international concern over the situation in Gaza.
Agenda and Joint Statement
The meeting will begin with an opening speech by President Ramaphosa, followed by addresses from invited states and members. The primary focus will be the current humanitarian situation in Gaza. A joint statement, particularly referencing the situation in Gaza, is expected to be adopted at the meeting.
Involvement of Additional Nations
Leaders of the BRICS countries will be joined by invited leaders from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, reflecting a broader international engagement on the issue.
Background of the Gaza Conflict
The conflict escalated after Israel declared war against Hamas following an attack on October 7, which resulted in approximately 1,200 casualties, mostly civilians, and around 240 people taken hostage, as per Israeli officials.
South Africa’s Stance and Diplomatic Actions
Long a supporter of the Palestinian cause, South Africa has likened it to its own anti-apartheid struggle. In response to the Gaza situation, the South African government has announced plans to recall all diplomats from Israel as a sign of protest.
International Reactions
China, historically sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, has called for an immediate ceasefire. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of exacerbating tensions in the Middle East and criticized Israel’s actions in the conflict.
