Indian Rupee Holds Steady Against US Dollar Amidst Mixed Market Signals

    Stable Opening in Currency Market
The Indian rupee displayed resilience in early Monday trading, opening nearly flat at 83.26 against the US dollar. This stability came despite a downward trend in domestic equity markets and continued dollar demand from importers. The rupee’s opening was marginally higher, at 83.24 a dollar, compared to its previous close of 83.27.

    US Dollar Index Drops
In contrast to the rupee’s stability, the dollar index, a measure of the US dollar against six major currencies, fell by 0.36%, registering at 103.54. This decline marked a more than two-month low for the greenback, offering some support to the Indian currency amidst mixed global cues.

Crude Oil Prices and Foreign Outflows Impact Sentiments
However, investor sentiments were dampened by rising crude oil prices and persistent foreign fund outflows. Brent crude futures, the global benchmark for oil prices, saw a 0.86% increase to $81.30 per barrel. “Rupee opened virtually unchanged as demand for dollars continues unabated and RBI keeps its supply tap on,” commented Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.

Equities Down and Forex Reserves Dip
In the domestic sphere, Indian equity markets showed a downward trend. The BSE Sensex dropped by 207.21 points, or 0.31%, to 65,587.52 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 lowered by 43.10 points, or 0.22%, to 19,688.70 points. Adding to the cautious market sentiment, India’s foreign exchange reserves decreased by $462 million to $590.321 billion for the week ended November 10. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on the preceding Friday, with sales amounting to ₹477.76 crore.
