India Calls for Ceasefire and Dialogue Amid Indo-Myanmar Border Crisis

India has voiced a strong call for the cessation of violence and a constructive dialogue to resolve the escalating situation at the Indo-Myanmar border. This statement came from Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi during a weekly briefing, emphasizing India’s desire for the restoration of peace, stability, and democracy in Myanmar.

Humanitarian Crisis and Influx of Refugees

Following recent airstrikes by the Myanmar army near the border, approximately 5,000 Myanmar nationals have sought refuge in Mizoram’s Zokhawthar area. Bagchi expressed deep concern over the incidents close to the Indian border, noting the substantial movement of Myanmar nationals into Indian territory. He highlighted that local authorities in the neighboring states are handling the situation on humanitarian grounds and facilitating the voluntary return of those wishing to go back to Myanmar.

Support Provided to Refugees in Mizoram

The influx of refugees has led to the creation of makeshift shelters in the Zokhawthar area. Local administration, NGOs, the Young Mizo Association, and Village Councils are actively providing food, clothing, and medical aid to these displaced individuals. Currently, around 160 families from Myanmar are residing in the Lipui area of Zokhawthar.

Escalating Conflict and Myanmar’s Military Junta

The conflict, which ignited in 2021, has seen a recent intensification. The People’s Defence Force (PDF) of Myanmar attacked and captured two Myanmar Army posts, leading to 39 Myanmar Army personnel seeking refuge in Mizoram and surrendering to the local police, bringing the total number of surrenders to 42. This development reflects the significant challenges faced by Myanmar’s military junta, which has been in power since a 2021 coup. Ethnic minority forces have launched a coordinated offensive against the junta, capturing towns and military posts, as reported by Reuters.

The situation at the Indo-Myanmar border remains a complex geopolitical issue, with India advocating for a peaceful resolution through dialogue, while also addressing the humanitarian needs of refugees fleeing the conflict.
