J-K Kishtwar Set to Transform into North-India-Power-Hub, Says Union Minister Jitendra Singh
Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar is poised to become a major power hub in North India, generating approximately 6,000 MW of electricity upon the completion of ongoing power projects, announced Union Minister Jitendra Singh during his recent visit. This transformation is a result of concerted efforts and significant investments in the region’s hydropower infrastructure.
Rapid Hydropower Development in Kishtwar
Addressing a public meeting in Gulabgarh, Minister Jitendra Singh highlighted the substantial progress made in the hydropower sector over the past decade. Six to seven major hydropower projects, initiated in the last 9 to 10 years, include the Pakal Dul project with a 1,000 MW capacity and the Kiru hydroelectric project with a capacity of 624 MW. These projects, along with the revived Ratle project and the existing Dulhasti power station, contribute to the impressive 6,000 MW electricity generation target.

Economic Boost and Opportunities for Locals
Singh emphasized that the hydropower projects not only address the power supply shortage in Jammu and Kashmir but also bring about substantial economic benefits. The significant investment in these projects creates both direct and indirect opportunities for the local population, marking a positive turn in the region’s socio-economic landscape.
Modi’s Impact on Neglected Regions
Singh attributed the developmental surge in Kishtwar to a shift in work culture under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He pointed out that for decades, Kishtwar was neglected due to political considerations, but Modi’s commitment to inclusive development has transformed the region. The construction of a degree college for Paddar and improvements in road infrastructure are just a few examples of the positive changes witnessed in Kishtwar.
Infrastructure Development Beyond Power Projects
Beyond hydropower projects, Minister Singh highlighted other crucial infrastructure developments in Kishtwar. This includes the reduction in travel time from Jammu to Kishtwar, the establishment of an airport under the UDAAN scheme, and the creation of new national highways. These improvements not only enhance connectivity but also contribute to the overall progress of the region.
