New Zealand Military Chief Tony Davies Resigns Over Undisclosed Inappropriate Relationship
WELLINGTON, October 23, 2026 & [VoM News]: Tony Davies, who is the New Zealand’s military chief, and Air Marshal, has resigned on Friday, as per details available with VoM News.
As per details, he tenders the resignation after acknowledging an inappropriate relationship during his time as a unit leader and admitted that he failed to disclose it when he had the opportunity.
Davies took the charge of Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force in 2024, and he described his resignation as being for personal reasons arising from past “errors of judgement.”
“The errors of judgement were contrary to the values of the Defence Force,” Davies said in a statement.
Though, he not revealed the further details about the relationship or when it occurred.
Meanwhile, the New Zealand Defence Minister Paul Goldsmith confirmed receiving the resignation, describing the circumstances as an “integrity matter.”
He said he and Davies agreed that the military chief’s position was no longer tenable.
Now, the matter has been referred to an independent inspector-general responsible for investigating military conduct.
The Defence Force said it would not comment further.
Leadership of the military is transitioning to Vice Chief Rear Admiral Mat Williams.
Davies joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1984 and served for more than four decades.
