Bhutan Opens New Gelephu Immigration Terminal With Biometric E-Gates for Indian Travellers
GELEPHU, October 23, 2026, (VoM News): In a bid to provide the eligible Indian and Bhutanese nationals to clear immigration more efficiently at the Gelephu land border, the authorities in Bhutan has opened a new Immigration Terminal equipped with automated biometric e-gates.
Revealing the further details, the Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) has opened a new Immigration Terminal equipped with automated biometric e-gates, which will allow the eligible Indian and Bhutanese nationals to clear immigration more efficiently at the Gelephu land border.
GMC Governor Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering inaugurated the facility, and he stated it as a relief in handling the increasing cross-border movement between Bhutan and India.
By this development, now, the e-gates verify travellers against their registered biometric information, enabling eligible passengers to complete immigration clearance without routine manual processing.
And, un-registered biometric details will continue to use staffed immigration counters.
Tshering said the terminal would also strengthen record-keeping and monitoring of cross-border movement.
A nominal service fee is expected to be introduced to support maintenance and services.
The facility currently serves Indian and Bhutanese nationals subject to applicable entry requirements. Immigration facilities for third-country nationals are planned for a later stage in coordination with Indian authorities.
As the India and Bhutan expand transport connectivity around Gelephu, this development becomes a major plan of action.
