Hindus for Human Rights Stands in Solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk and Students Fasting at Jantar Mantar
No student or peaceful protester should have to risk their life simply to secure a response from the government
New York, New York (July 14th, 2026) Hindus for Human Rights stands in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk and the students participating in the ongoing hunger strike at Jantar Mantar over alleged examination irregularities, failures of educational governance, and the urgent need for public accountability. After more than two weeks of fasting, the protest has become a serious medical crisis. A student associated with the All India Students’ Association has reportedly been hospitalized with hypovolemic shock, while Wangchuk has lost more than eight kilograms and is experiencing severe weakness and dangerously low blood sugar levels. We send our care and support to everyone whose health has been placed at risk. Students in India have repeatedly borne the consequences of examination leaks, administrative failures, delayed results, recruitment irregularities, and systems that often appear unresponsive to the enormous personal and financial pressures placed upon young people and their families. Their concerns deserve more than silence. The government may disagree with particular demands made by the protesters, including calls for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. But disagreement does not remove its responsibility to engage. No peaceful protest should have to escalate into a threat to human life before those in power are willing to listen. Also Read This: Hindus for Human Rights Welcomes United States Supreme Court Decision Upholding Birthright Citizenship We urge the Union government and Ministry of Education to immediately: Send an authorized representative to meet with the fasting protesters; Ensure unrestricted access to appropriate medical care;Provide a transparent public response to the allegations raised by students;Establish a clear process for addressing examination and recruitment irregularities; and Protect the right to peaceful protest without harassment or obstruction. This moment is larger than any one party or organization. It concerns whether students can trust the institutions responsible for their education and futures, and whether peaceful democratic dissent will receive a meaningful response before irreversible harm occurs. We hope Sonam Wangchuk and the fasting students are able to end their protest safely and with dignity. The government must act before another student is hospitalized—or a life is lost.
