2024 General Elections in Pakistan Enter Intense Phase as Nomination Deadline Closes
Following the conclusion of the extended nomination deadline for national and provincial constituencies on Sunday, the 2024 general elections in Pakistan have moved into the next phase, reports Dawn.
The Pakistan Election Commission is set to unveil the final list of eligible candidates once the vetting process concludes in the coming days, heralding a competitive environment across several constituencies.
Numerous candidates or their representatives filed nomination papers in Punjab, particularly in Lahore, where approximately 600 contenders submitted papers for 14 National Assembly and 30 provincial constituencies.
Among notable submissions were various key figures from prominent political parties, including PML-N, PTI, and PPP, marking their presence in significant constituencies.
In NA-122, prominent figures like Imran Khan, Sardar Latif Khosa, and others filed their nominations, while in NA-123, Shehbaz Sharif and Liaqat Baloch were among the contenders.
Similarly, various individuals filed papers for NA-124 to NA-129, highlighting the diverse political spectrum.
The optimism among PML-N candidates, particularly in constituencies like NA-128, reflected confidence in their chances of victory, as expressed by Hafiz Mian Nauman.
While the submission process in Rawalpindi concluded with less fanfare than expected, most major party leaders had presented their nominees in the initial days.
Despite the extended deadline, less commotion was witnessed outside the returning officers’ offices during the latter stages.
The Election Commission of Pakistan had initially set the nomination filing deadline for December 20-22 but extended it by two days to December 24.
Subsequently, the returning officers will scrutinize the candidates from December 25-30, leading up to the election scheduled for February 8, 2024, according to ARY News.
