Vizhinjam Port Welcomes Cranes from China with Grand Water Salute
In a significant development for the Vizhinjam port, the arrival of the first ship, Zhen Hua 15, carrying cranes from China, was celebrated with a majestic water salute. Tug boats gracefully guided the vessel into the Rs 7,700 crore deep-water international port, marking a remarkable milestone.
Cranes Set to Grace Vizhinjam Port
The massive container handling cranes on board the Zhen Hua 15 are now poised to be transferred to the port, and this momentous event is scheduled for Sunday, October 15. Distinguished guests, including Union Minister for Ports Sarbananda Sonowal and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, will be present to witness this historic event.
The vessel’s journey from China, which commenced at the end of August, faced delays along the way due to adverse weather conditions. Upon reaching Indian coastal waters, it made a brief stop at Mundra port in Gujarat to offload some cranes before making its way to Vizhinjam. The vessel finally docked at Vizhinjam port at approximately 11:20 am, signifying a major step forward in the port’s development.
Vizhinjam Port – A Glimpse into the Future
Vizhinjam port is set to become one of the world’s largest ports once it is commissioned, and its construction is progressing under a public-private partnership model. The Adani Group is the private partner in this ambitious project, which has been marred by delays, primarily related to land acquisition. However, with 75% of the breakwater construction already complete, the port’s future is looking brighter than ever.
The port’s journey hasn’t been without challenges, as it faced opposition from local fishermen who expressed concerns about potential adverse effects on their livelihoods. Additionally, environmental concerns have been raised regarding the construction and operation of the port. Despite these hurdles, Vizhinjam port is on its way to becoming a pivotal hub for trade and commerce in the region.
