Vijaypat Singhania, Former Chairman of Raymond Group and Padma Bhushan Awardee, Passes Away at 87
Vijaypat Singhania, former Chairman of the Raymond Group and Padma Bhushan awardee, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 87 on Saturday, as confirmed by his family.
In a statement announcing the death of Singhania, his son Gautam Singhania said: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing away of a visionary leader, a philanthropist, and an inspiring personality whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Singhania will be cremated at Chandanwadi crematorium in Mumbai on Sunday afternoon. He is survived by his wife Ashadevi Singhania and children Madhupati Singhania, Shephali Ruia, and Gautam Singhania.
Singhania was born on October 4, 1938, and took over the reins of the Raymond Group in 1980. Under his leadership, the company became one of India’s most recognized names in men’s fashion.
In addition to this, he was also known to be a keen enthusiast of flying. Singhania was a seasoned aviator and held a world record in flying a hot air balloon to the highest altitude in the world.
Singhania was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 2006 in recognition of his contributions to trade and industry.
But after two decades of leading Raymond, Singhania stepped down as chairman in 2000, passing on the reins of the company and a substantial stake to his son Gautam.
The father and son had a long-standing legal battle starting in 2015, but their differences were resolved in 2024, leading to a public reconciliation after years of estrangement.
The death of Singhania brings to a close an era for one of India’s most distinguished business families, a legacy defined by enterprise, ambition, and perseverance.
