Vaishno Devi Yatra Halted for 11th Consecutive Day
SRINAGAR: The pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine remained suspended for the eleventh consecutive day on Friday, following the 26 August landslide that killed 34 pilgrims and injured 20 others in the Trikuta hills.
Despite a marked improvement in weather after ten days of heavy rain, flash floods and landslides, authorities have yet to decide on resuming the yatra. “Yatra is still suspended. This is due to the decision taken by authorities last week, keeping in view the safety of pilgrims,” an official said, adding that restoration work on damaged tracks and structures is under way, reports Daily Excelsior.
The ongoing suspension, the longest since COVID-19 restrictions, reflects the administration’s focus on safety before reopening the pilgrimage route. Local train services between Jammu and Katra, which were initiated to aid stranded passengers, also remain halted.
